SUTHERLAND Thursday, 22 July 2010
William Sutherland was born in Shetland in 1855. He married Mary Ellen Forster in Warrington, Cheshire in 1883. Mary appears in the 1891 and 1901 census returns (Liverpool) as Married. In the 1911 census (Liverpool) she is listed as Widow. Daughter Elizabeth married in 1911 her certificate details 'father deceased - formerly master mariner' (there were also 2 sons William & Thomas Alexander). I believe that William was away at sea for the 1891 & 1901 census. It has been passed down the generations that William drowned himself in Liverpool docks after coming home from sea to find his home locked up and his family gone. I can find no records of William's seafaring career or his death. Can anyone help? Anything at all that will help me confirm William went to sea, lived in Liverpool, commited suicide.
