Walters Wednesday, 01 September 2010
Searching for g-grandmother Maud Walters (this was name she used in first few B/C's of her children but then used name Maud Alice Hutchings). Doesn't look like she and Gilbert Rawlings married but looks like they used his previous M/C (wife no.1, Alice Maud Hutchings, disowned him and said he'd died to her family after getting preg and returning to Devon as widow!). Gilbert had two or three children before marriage to Alice Maud Hutchings in Devon though so it seems he may have lived double life and Alice Hutchings found out and left him but Maud Walters had him back and had more children with him. I think they may have used this old M/C to get War Pension as his records have ? against children names with her maiden name as Walters. Found Gilbert Rawlings and his children in 1911 census in workhouse and couldn't find a hutchings or rawlings mother but found Maud Walters in there too but she was stated as single. Also found Maud Walters in 1901 census (single) working as servant but both census said born 1883 Thrandeston, Diss, Norfolk so same person. However, cannot use M/C for parents details to trace her to 1891 census as M/C doesn't exist (I think) and cannot find her on previous census or birth searches using Diss, Thrandeston as area - I am completely stuck and don't know what to do next. Please please can someone help me - the story is so confusing, I just don't understand why they wouldn't have married & used the M/C as their own (if that did happen) or why she was in workhouse in 1911 census as single but her 'husband' Gilbert stated as married and their children were there - I thought whole family had to go in if father went in so Maud Walters must be mother but why single? If anyone can help or needs more info, please let me know. Thank you very much, Bea
