New to Family History

For the benefit of people who are thinking about tracing their own family tree and history, the information contained on this page is a brief overview of how to begin, with a particular emphasis on researching ancestors in England, Scotland Ireland & Wales. Further information and links will be added on N.Ireland and Eire shortly.

We have tried to provide a resume of the most important points for the newcomer. However, these notes should not be regarded as a substitute for good old-fashioned books. Especially, if you are a beginner, you are strongly advised to start by visiting your local library and doing some reading on genealogy and family history. further more there are many good magazines on Family History / Genealogy. Why not visit your local newsagent or WH Smiths?
